Street & Sanitation - Rules & Ordinances

Was something left behind?

Please help us ensure Lafayette stays clean and all refuse and yard waste is picked by following the guidelines below. Listed are the most common reasons items are left behind:

Sanitation:

  • Toters MUST be placed at by 6:00 a.m. on your scheduled collection day. Toters MUST be 3 feet from any obstruction (i.e. mailbox, vehicle, pole, tree), have 2 feet of space in between them, and MUST have a clear path from the curb to the street (not behind vehicles). The toters will not be emptied if the pick up instructions are not followed.
  • Improper items placed in toter. Items such as concrete, bricks, lumber, drywall, shingles, and other construction/renovation materials cannot be disposed of in your toter. Additionally, items such as small appliances, car parts, inflatable pools, blankets, yard waste, chemicals, any kind of oil (frying, motor, etc.) or latex paint cannot be placed in your toter. The toter is for regular household waste and recycling only.
  • Any item that contains or HAS contained freon or any other refrigerant will not be picked up. Refrigerators, A/C units, and freezers will not be collected.
  • Too heavy. Toters more than 50 lbs are not easily maneuverable to hook on the truck and pose an injury risk to the collectors.
  • Work was performed by a contractor. Items put out for collection that had the work done by a contractor will not be collected. Any items/debris removed by or waste from the installation of new construction/renovation must be disposed of by the contractor.
  • Biohazardous waste cannot be disposed of in toters.
  • Kitty litter, sawdust, metal shavings, and other small particulates must be bagged.
  • Concrete blocks, bricks, and similar items will not be picked up because of the excessive wear they cause trucks
  • Wood decking, wood fencing, and lumber must be cut up into sections that are less than 4 feet in length due to the excessive wear they cause trucks

Yard Waste/Brush Collection:

  • Yard waste bag is too heavy. Yard waste bags cannot exceed 40 lbs.
  • Yard waste is comingled with trash. Yard waste is recycled into mulch by the City and cannot contain trash.
  • Yard waste is in a plastic bag. Because yard waste is recycled into mulch, it cannot be placed in plastic bags. Paper bags must be used.
  • Yard waste or tree must be removed by the contractor who performed the service.
