Purpose
There is no question that the increased diversity in our city is adding great value to our schools, businesses, and community. In an effort to better serve and to understand the issues affecting the city, we need working Commissions that are dedicated to understanding and explaining how the City of Lafayette will move forward as our demographics are changing.
The Commission
The City of Lafayette Human Relations Commission was created in 1968, and consists of 9 citizens appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council.
The Commission's main objectives are to end prejudice, intolerance, bigotry, and discrimination in the City of Lafayette, to encourage respect and understanding of all individuals and groups, and to investigate complaints of discrimination in the City of Lafayette.
The Commission is concerned with any discrimination based on race, sex, religion, color, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, veteran status, age or gender identity and is available to investigate discriminatory acts in the areas of employment, access to public accommodations, and the purchase or rental of housing.
Youth Human Relations Commission
The Youth Human Relations Commission will serve as an extension of the HRC in order to better serve and address youth needs in the community as related to the HRC's main objectives. Those objectives are to end prejudice, intolerance, bigotry, and discrimination in the City of Lafayette, and to encourage respect and understanding of all individuals and groups.

Brochure
The Commission produces a brochure for citizens to review in order to help them better understand the signs of wrongful discrimination, and to help them understand if they have been discriminated against. The brochure can be found online or picked up at a number of locations throughout the Lafayette community (see list below).
File a Complaint
Complaints can be filed within 90 days of a discriminatory act taking place using the links below. Completed forms can be mailed to the Commission or emailed to hrhelpdesk@lafayette.in.gov. Please note that the Commission is unable to investigate any complaint in which the Complainant has filed, or intends to file, complaints with the EEOC or Indiana Civil Rights Commission (ICRC). The Human Relations Commission is also unable to investigate any complaint made against the City of Lafayette, its departments, or its affiliates.
