During the week of August 22nd through the 26th, the 17th annual K9 Olympics were held at Vohne Liche Kennels in Peru, Indiana. The Lafayette Police Department K9 teams participated in the Olympics as a group with the Tippecanoe County Metro K9 Unit. K9 units participating were Officer Demello and K9 Roy, Officer Wilson and K9 Jeori, and Officer Saxton and K9 Boyka.
The K9 teams competed against others from Canada, Brazil, the US Secret Service, the Department of Defense, as well as numerous other teams from local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The competition was based on drug detection, explosive detection, building searches, obedience, speed, and open area searches.
Officer Wilson and K9 Jeori placed 3rd in both the Area Search for an individual and the much revered Hard Dog Fast Dog competition. Officer Saxton and K9 Boyka placed 2nd in Area Tracking. We would like to congratulate the entire K9 unit for their hard work in keeping the community safe and their performances at the K9 Olympics.
