On the above date at approximately 11:53pm, Officers with the Lafayette Police Department responded to a fight at the Ben Hur Tavern (1002 S. 4th St.). Upon arrival officers located several subjects that had been involved in an altercation. Several subjects were detained and two were later arrested. The arrested subjects were identified as John Williams and his brother, Richard Williams.

Further investigation revealed that earlier, John Williams had been asked to leave the bar by staff due to his behavior. He allegedly made threats that he would return. Approximately 20 minutes after he was kicked out, John Williams returned with his brother, Richard Williams. Both Williams brothers were allegedly armed with knives waiving them around and came into the tavern threatening patrons. Several patrons then became involved in an altercation resulting in at least one person getting a minor cut. The victim was evaluated on scene, but refused further medical attention. During the altercation, John Williams was injured and evaluated at a local hospital prior to being jailed. Police located two knives believed to be involved in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

Both John Williams and Richard Williams were arrested and jailed for:

1) Battery While Armed with a Deadly Weapon (Felony – Level 5)
2) Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon (Felony – Level 5)

The fact a person has been arrested or charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
